US President Donald Trump, is demanding Ukrainian President Volodymer Zelensky hold elections if he wishes to engage in negotiations to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
“We have a situation where we haven’t had elections in Ukraine, where there is essentially martial law, and where the leader in Ukraine, I hate to say it, has a 4% approval rating. The country has been devastated; most cities are in ruins, and the buildings are collapsed. It looks like a massive demolition site,” the US leader told reporters after signing several new executive orders in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, according to TASS.
Trump continued, “When they want a seat at the table, you could argue that the people of Ukraine should have a say. It’s been a long time since we’ve had an election. That’s not a Russia thing; that’s coming from me and many other countries as well.”

The presidential election in Ukraine was scheduled for March 2024 but was canceled due to martial law. Many experts believe that the president’s term cannot be extended during martial law, unlike that of the Verkhovna Rada, or national parliament. Although Zelensky’s official term expires on May 20, 2024, he has stated that concerns about his legitimacy are not significant to him.
Ukrainian media occasionally speculate on potential preparations for an election campaign, but there have been no official confirmations. Meanwhile, opinion polls suggest that military figures Valery Zaluzhny and Kirill Budanov are more trusted by Ukrainians than Zelensky, with some analysts naming them as potential presidential candidates if an election is eventually held.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that Russia needs to know who in Kyiv can sign legally binding documents now that Zelensky is considered no longer a legitimate leader. He argues that any agreements signed with the current authorities would be null and void due to their lack of legitimacy.
