The Trump administration has abruptly halted the supply of life-saving medicines and medical supplies to vulnerable communities worldwide, triggering alarm among health experts and humanitarian organizations.
The freeze affects crucial programs supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), including the provision of drugs for HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis, as well as essential care for newborns and pregnant women.
The suspension follows a directive issued by President Donald Trump on January 20, ordering a 90-day review of all U.S. foreign aid programs. As part of this review, USAID has instructed its contractors and partners to immediately pause operations, according to sources familiar with the situation.
One of the organizations impacted is Chemonics, a major U.S. consulting firm that works with USAID to distribute medicines across the globe. A memo sent to the company outlined the halt in supplies, leaving millions of patients uncertain about their access to critical treatments.
“This is catastrophic,” said Atul Gawande, who recently stepped down as USAID’s global health chief. “Right now, 20 million people rely on donated HIV medications to stay alive. Without them, lives will be lost.”
Beyond HIV treatment, the freeze could have devastating effects on efforts to combat malaria and tuberculosis—diseases that disproportionately affect low-income countries. Experts warn that any disruption in treatment could increase drug resistance, making these illnesses even harder to control.
Humanitarian organizations have also reported being ordered to stop delivering medicine to clinics, even when supplies are available. Some groups working with children orphaned by HIV—who number in the millions across 23 countries—have been told to suspend operations.
The decision has sparked backlash among global health advocates, who argue that withholding aid endangers lives and undermines decades of progress in disease prevention and treatment. Many fear that the freeze will have ripple effects, leading to overwhelmed hospitals, rising infection rates, and unnecessary deaths.

In addition to the aid suspension, the Trump administration has placed around 60 senior USAID officials on administrative leave. Sources within the agency suggest the move is part of an effort to weed out career staff viewed as resistant to the administration’s policy changes.
While the White House has framed the aid freeze as a necessary review to ensure efficiency and alignment with U.S. foreign policy goals, critics argue that the move prioritizes politics over humanitarian needs.
With the 90-day review period underway, health organizations and aid agencies are scrambling to find alternative solutions to prevent a potential crisis.
