Tanzanian Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office for Union and Environment, Engineer Hamad Masauni, has been elected Vice President of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

The announcement was made during the seventh session of the Assembly, which convened at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The UNEA is the leading global forum for environmental decision-making, bringing together representatives from all 193 UN member states to discuss policies, strategies, and initiatives aimed at addressing urgent environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development.

Masauni’s election underscores Tanzania’s growing role in international environmental governance and highlights the country’s commitment to promoting sustainable development both regionally and globally. As Vice President of UNEA, he will assist in guiding the Assembly’s deliberations, ensuring that member states collaborate effectively on critical environmental issues.

In his new role, Masauni will also contribute to shaping the UNEA agenda, facilitating negotiations among member states, and supporting initiatives that foster environmental sustainability across Africa and beyond. Environmental experts note that this position will provide Tanzania with a platform to influence global discussions on climate adaptation, conservation policies, and the implementation of international environmental agreements.

The seventh session of UNEA in Nairobi has brought together ministers, policymakers, and environmental leaders from around the world. Key topics discussed include accelerating climate action, reducing plastic pollution, advancing renewable energy, and promoting equitable access to natural resources. Massoni expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him and emphasized the importance of global cooperation to tackle environmental challenges that transcend national borders.

Observers highlight that Masauni’s appointment comes at a critical moment, as countries intensify efforts to implement the Paris Agreement and other international environmental commitments. Africa, in particular, is facing mounting pressure to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, making representation at the UNEA Council a significant opportunity for Tanzanian leadership.

In addition to his UNEA responsibilities, Masauni is expected to continue steering national initiatives on sustainable development, conservation, and climate resilience, bridging local priorities with global environmental agendas. His election has been welcomed by Tanzanian civil society groups, who view it as a milestone for the country’s influence in international environmental diplomacy.

The UNEA Council continues to play a pivotal role in shaping global environmental policies, and Masauni’s leadership is anticipated to contribute meaningfully to advancing sustainability, climate action, and cooperative international strategies for the planet’s future.
