Tanzania and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their strong partnership, focusing on expanding trade and investment to foster sustainable development.
This commitment was solidified during a high-level dialogue held in Dar es Salaam on December 10, 2024.
The discussions brought together Tanzanian government leaders and EU representatives, including Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Cosato Chumi, and Rita Laranjinha, Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service. The event highlighted a shared vision for a stronger economic relationship, built on decades of cooperation dating back to 1960.
“We are committed to creating more opportunities for Tanzanian products in EU markets and attracting investment in sectors like renewable energy, industrialization, and infrastructure,” Chumi stated during the dialogue. He emphasized that the EU remains one of Tanzania’s most significant economic allies, contributing extensively to the country’s development.
Laranjinha echoed this, underscoring the EU’s commitment to Tanzania’s goals. “Over the past decade, the EU has invested €3 billion in Tanzania, creating jobs, generating tax revenue, and supporting local businesses,” she noted.
The dialogue came shortly after the Tanzania-EU Business Forum, a two-day event that resulted in deals worth €1 billion. These agreements included investments in renewable energy projects, infrastructure development, and financial support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Gender-inclusive businesses and initiatives tied to climate resilience also received pledges of support.

The EU has played a central role in Tanzania’s development, aligning with the country’s goals to achieve middle-income status by 2025. Over the years, trade between the EU and Tanzania has grown significantly, reaching $2.1 billion in 2022, up from $1.2 billion in 2019.
The partnership also supports broader initiatives under the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, targeting digital infrastructure, green energy, and improved transportation systems. These efforts aim to promote sustainable growth, create jobs, and ensure economic inclusivity for Tanzanians.
This latest dialogue and the business agreements that followed reflect a mutual commitment to long-term collaboration, bringing both economic and social benefits to Tanzania while reinforcing its ties with one of its most critical global partners
