Tanzania and China have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening a long-standing strategic partnership, following high-level bilateral talks held in Dar es Salaam between the two countries’ foreign ministers.

The meeting brought together Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, and China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation across political, economic and social spheres, reflecting a relationship that has evolved over decades and continues to play a significant role in Tanzania’s development trajectory.

During the talks, both leaders revisited the historical foundations of relations between Tanzania and China, noting that the partnership was built on mutual respect, trust and shared development goals. They emphasized that these principles, first laid down by the founding leaders of the two nations, remain relevant as both countries navigate a changing global environment.

Ambassador Kombo expressed appreciation for China’s continued support to Tanzania’s development efforts, particularly in key sectors such as infrastructure, health, education, energy and industrial growth. He noted that cooperation in these areas has contributed to improved connectivity, expanded access to essential services and increased economic opportunities. The Tanzanian government, he said, remains committed to working closely with China to attract investment, expand trade and enhance access to modern technology in order to accelerate economic growth and improve livelihoods.

The Tanzanian side also highlighted the importance of ensuring that future cooperation aligns with national development priorities and delivers tangible benefits to citizens. Emphasis was placed on value addition, skills transfer and sustainable development, as Tanzania seeks to strengthen its position within regional and global markets.

In response, Minister Wang Yi reiterated China’s readiness to continue supporting Tanzania’s development agenda. He described Tanzania as a trusted partner and reaffirmed China’s broader commitment to cooperation with African countries. Wang underscored the importance of multilateral frameworks such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation, which he said provide platforms for advancing shared development objectives through infrastructure development, trade facilitation and people-to-people exchanges.

Beyond bilateral matters, the talks also addressed regional and international issues of common concern. The two ministers stressed the need for stronger solidarity among developing nations, the promotion of peace and security, and the pursuit of a more inclusive and equitable international system. They agreed that cooperation among Global South countries is increasingly important in addressing global economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.

Wang Yi’s visit was seen as a signal of renewed momentum in Tanzania–China relations, coming at a time when both countries are seeking to strengthen partnerships that support long-term development and stability. Observers note that the discussions in Dar es Salaam reflect a shared intention to move beyond traditional cooperation models toward a more comprehensive strategic partnership.
