What was meant to be a scenic tour over New York City turned into a horrifying tragedy Thursday afternoon, when a helicopter suddenly broke apart midair and crashed upside-down into the Hudson River, claiming the lives of all six people on board.

The Bell 206 helicopter, which took off from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport around 2:59 p.m., was carrying a Spanish family of five—both parents and their three young children—along with the American pilot. Just minutes into the flight, the aircraft began to show signs of failure near the New Jersey waterfront, and within seconds, it plummeted from the sky, shattering into the river below.

Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene. “We heard a loud crack—like something snapping in the sky,” said Marcia Lane, who was walking along the riverfront in Jersey City. “Then we saw pieces falling, and the helicopter just flipped and crashed into the water.”

Emergency crews responded within minutes, pulling debris and bodies from the river. Four of the victims were declared dead at the scene. The remaining two—believed to be one of the children and the pilot—were rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from their injuries.

Authorities identified the victims as Agustín Escobar, a business executive from Barcelona, his wife Mercè Camprubí Montal, and their three children, ages 4, 5, and 11. The pilot, whose name has not yet been released pending family notification, was a 36-year-old U.S. citizen.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have both launched investigations into the crash. Early reports suggest that a mechanical failure involving the helicopter’s rotor system may have led to the midair breakup. One source close to the investigation said the main rotor may have struck part of the tail, causing the aircraft to lose control.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed condolences, calling the incident “an unthinkable loss.” “We grieve with the families today,” he said. “This was a deeply tragic accident, and we are committed to supporting the investigation in every way possible.”

The crash has reignited long-standing concerns over the safety of commercial helicopter tours in one of the busiest urban airspaces in the world. Sightseeing flights over Manhattan have grown in popularity in recent years, but critics argue that the risks to passengers and people on the ground remain too high.

As investigations continue, aviation authorities have issued temporary flight restrictions in the area, and the tour operator behind Thursday’s flight has suspended operations indefinitely.

The Hudson River, often a symbol of beauty and resilience in New York lore, now carries the weight of yet another heartbreaking story—one of lives lost far too soon, and families devastated in an instant.
