The grim task of exhuming victims from the Shakahola Forest continued on Monday, with seven additional bodies uncovered. This brings the total number of bodies recovered from the mass graves to 436.
The exhumations began last year after hundreds of victims of a doomsday cult were discovered buried in the remote forest near Kenya‘s coast. In April 2023, the first bodies were found, leading to the arrest of pastor Paul Mackenzie, the alleged leader of the cult.
Mackenzie has been charged with 191 counts of murder, manslaughter, and terrorism. He has also faced charges of child torture and cruelty. The shocking case has drawn attention to the lack of regulation surrounding churches and cults in Kenya, a predominantly Christian nation.

After the initial discoveries, the Kenyan government temporarily paused the exhumations to allow for DNA identification of the victims. So far, only 34 of the 436 bodies have been positively identified.
