The former Prime Minister of Kenya and a towering figure in the nation’s political landscape, Raila Odinga  has passed away at the age of 80.

He died on Wednesday while receiving treatment at a hospital in India, where he had been resting following a brief illness.

The announcement follows days of speculation about his health, which his family had previously dismissed. His elder brother, Dr. Oburu Odinga, a Senator from Siaya County, reassured the public that Raila was in good spirits and recovering well. “He has been under treatment, but his condition was stable. Raila was resting and in good health,” Dr. Oburu stated.

Friends and close associates, including prominent political figures and long-time allies, confirmed that Raila was conscious and communicative during his stay at the hospital. Vice President Kithure Kindiki noted that he had spoken with Raila in recent days and emphasized that the former leader was receiving excellent care. “He is in good health, and I expect he would have returned home in a few days,” Kindiki said.
