Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially given the green light for the deployment of the country’s latest nuclear-powered submarine, Perm, in a move that strengthens Russia’s naval forces.
The submarine, part of the Yasen-M class, is the first to be equipped with the cutting-edge Zircon hypersonic missiles as a standard feature.
The launch ceremony took place via video link from Murmansk, where Putin authorized the deployment with a simple but decisive statement: “I hereby authorize!” The Perm is the sixth submarine in its class, constructed at the Sevmash shipyard, a key site for Russia’s submarine production.
The Zircon missiles onboard the Perm are a game-changer. Capable of traveling at several times the speed of sound and reaching targets up to 900 kilometers (about 560 miles) away, they are designed to outmaneuver existing defense systems. This advanced weaponry enhances Russia’s military reach, especially in strategic maritime zones.
During his visit to Murmansk, Putin also inspected another Yasen-M class submarine, Arkhangelsk, and toured Atomflot, the company managing Russia’s fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers.

This visit highlighted Russia’s ongoing focus on strengthening its Arctic presence, an area of increasing geopolitical importance due to newly accessible trade routes and valuable resources exposed by melting ice.
The launch of the Perm signals Russia’s commitment to modernizing its naval forces at a time of heightened global tensions. Military analysts see the deployment of hypersonic weapons on submarines as a significant shift in naval power dynamics, with potential implications for global security.
As the Perm enters active service, its movements and capabilities will be closely watched by international observers. For Russia, this launch is not just about enhancing defense—it’s a statement of strength and technological progress in an evolving global landscape.
