Orban Urges EU to Follow U.S. on Ukraine

He also cast doubt on the effectiveness of diplomatic negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, saying, "Russian-Ukrainian negotiations will never end this war."

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has urged the European Union to align its position on the Ukraine conflict with that of the United States, warning against divergent strategies between the two allies.

Speaking on Saturday, Orbán asserted that “there is no point in Europe going down different paths with the US,” suggesting that policy coordination is essential to resolving the ongoing war.

He also cast doubt on the effectiveness of diplomatic negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, saying, “Russian-Ukrainian negotiations will never end this war.”

Orbán, one of Europe’s most outspoken leaders on the war, has consistently opposed increased military support to Ukraine and has instead called for immediate ceasefires and peace talks. His latest comments come amid renewed Western commitments to provide further aid to Ukraine and strengthen defense postures against Russia.

Orbán’s position has often put Hungary at odds with other EU member states, particularly as Brussels continues to push for unified support to Ukraine. His remarks are likely to add pressure to an already tense debate within the bloc over long-term strategies for the war, which has now entered its third year.

The Hungarian leader did not elaborate on what alignment with Washington would look like, but analysts suggest Orbán may be signaling openness to a U.S.-led peace plan or new diplomatic framework that sidelines direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

Despite his comments, EU leaders have reiterated their commitment to backing Ukraine politically, economically, and militarily for “as long as it takes.” However, Orbán’s stance underscores the persistent divisions within Europe over the path forward.
