NATO has issued a firm warning to Russia following a series of incursions into the airspace of alliance member states. Recently, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets briefly entered Estonian airspace before being intercepted and escorted out by NATO forces.
This incident follows a separate episode last week, when roughly 20 Russian drones crossed into Polish territory, some of which were shot down to prevent potential threats.
The alliance convened the North Atlantic Council, invoking Article 4 of the NATO treaty which allows member states to seek consultations when their security is perceived to be under threat. NATO officials emphasized their readiness to use all necessary measures, both military and non-military, to defend their member countries. They also reiterated their strong support for Ukraine, condemning Russia’s ongoing military operations as unprovoked and aggressive.
Lithuania, reacting to the growing risk, recently passed legislation empowering its armed forces to neutralize unmanned aerial vehicles that enter its airspace unlawfully. Previously, the rules only permitted such action if drones posed an immediate threat. This move demonstrates a heightened regional alertness to aerial incursions, reflecting the seriousness with which NATO members view these violations.

Meanwhile, the United States has underlined the need for decisive action. During a meeting with Ukrainian leaders, President Donald Trump suggested that NATO countries should be prepared to shoot down Russian aircraft if they violated sovereign airspace. Such comments mirror the increasing frustration among Western governments regarding Russia’s repeated provocations.
The recent violations underscore the tense security climate in Eastern Europe and the persistent challenges NATO faces in deterring aggressive maneuvers. Analysts note that the alliance’s coordinated response and strong diplomatic messaging are crucial in maintaining regional stability and preventing further escalation.
