Tanzania is looking to boost its port operations and global trade reach through a new partnership with one of Europe’s most established maritime hubs — the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium.
During his recent visit to Belgium, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, met with the port’s Director of Operations, Mr. Stefan Cassimon, to discuss a shared vision: strengthening cooperation between the Tanzania Ports Authority and the Antwerp Port.
Their talks focused on building long-term collaboration in key areas such as port management, investment opportunities, and training programs for staff — all aimed at upgrading Tanzania’s port systems and capacity.
“This kind of partnership isn’t just about technical know-how,” said Minister Kombo. “It’s about expanding Tanzania’s footprint in global trade. We’re opening doors to new markets and building the skills needed to compete efficiently and effectively.”
The Antwerp team expressed similar enthusiasm. Mr. Cassimon said the port was more than ready to work closely with Tanzania, offering its deep experience and innovation in maritime logistics.
“We see this as the beginning of a dynamic and impactful relationship,” said Cassimon. “With the right coordination, this cooperation can push Tanzania’s ports into a new era of performance and reliability.”

The meeting was part of Minister Kombo’s broader working tour of the European Union, which began on April 14. His visit comes at a time when Tanzania is actively pushing to modernize its infrastructure and expand trade partnerships beyond the region.
Recently, the country also launched a €15 million project with the European Union to upgrade the Dar es Salaam Port — an effort that includes collaboration with Antwerp experts to optimize systems and ease congestion.
Minister Kombo’s visit marks another step in Tanzania’s growing engagement with global partners, as the nation seeks not just investment but meaningful knowledge exchange. With ports acting as economic gateways, this new chapter in cooperation could prove pivotal for both countries.
“This isn’t just a handshake; it’s a signal that Tanzania is open for smart partnerships that bring real value to our people,” Kombo noted.
