Millicent Omanga Declines Nairobi Rivers Commission Appointment

Prominent Kenyan politician Millicent Omanga has declined her appointment as a member of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, a position to which President William Ruto appointed her last Friday.

In a statement issued on Saturday, following reports of her nomination, Omanga explained that she was not ready to assume the role due to personal reasons.

Omanga thanked Ruto for the nomination, expressing her appreciation but stating she was unable to accept.

“It is a great honor to be appointed to such an important role for enhancing the environment and public health of our beloved city of Nairobi,” she said.

“After deep reflection, I respectfully decline this appointment for personal reasons.”

Omanga added that she remains committed to supporting efforts to restore Nairobi’s rivers and is ready to contribute in any way compatible with her current responsibilities.

Omanga was expected to take over from former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, whose nomination to the commission faced legal challenges.

President William Ruto launched the Nairobi Rivers Commission in February 2023.
