International organizations, including the United Nations, have expressed concern over the worsening situation.

After days of tension, M23 rebels have successfully entered Bukavu, the second-largest city in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), further escalating the ongoing conflict in the region.

This follows their recent conquest of Nyabibwe in South Kivu province. The seizure of Bukavu, a strategic and heavily populated city, marks a critical juncture in the fight between government forces and the rebels.

According to Corneille Nangaa, the leader of the M23 alliance, the rebels began their assault by taking control of Kavumu Airport, located just outside Bukavu. The capture of the airport allowed M23 fighters to engage in heavy fighting with the national army, resulting in a fierce battle that saw the rebels advancing deeper into the city. Nangaa confirmed to Reuters on February 14, 2025, that his forces entered Bukavu on Friday evening, and they intend to continue their march toward Uvira, another key town, on Saturday, February 15.

The sounds of gunfire have been heard across Bukavu, with residents reporting chaotic scenes as M23 fighters moved into the city. The violence has displaced many, adding to the already dire humanitarian situation in the region. Bukavu’s capture is part of a larger pattern of M23’s growing control over strategic towns in South and North Kivu provinces, leading to widespread concern about the security of the region.

The DRC government, led by President Félix Tshisekedi, has condemned the M23’s actions and called for international assistance to prevent further rebel advances. Tshisekedi has also accused neighboring Rwanda of supporting the rebels, a claim that has heightened tensions in the region, though Rwanda denies any involvement.

International organizations, including the United Nations, have expressed concern over the worsening situation. The conflict has resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians, with many fleeing to neighboring countries or seeking refuge in more secure areas within DRC. As the violence continues to intensify, the situation remains unpredictable, and the safety of the people in Bukavu and beyond hangs in the balance.

The capture of Bukavu by the M23 rebels represents a significant escalation in the conflict. As the international community calls for a peaceful resolution, the future of the region remains uncertain, with the people of DRC bearing the brunt of the violence and instability.
