Learning From Turkey: Economic Strategies for Tanzania’s Growth

Turkey has a diverse economy with key sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism driving its growth.  As President  Samia lands in Ankara –Turkey for a five-day state visit, it is expected that , the President will tap into the many diverse  opportunities Turkey is blessed with that has boosted the country’s economy and also reduced unemployment rate especially among the youth.

Blessed with a robust manufacturing sector that contributes significantly to its GDP and exports. Turkey is among the world’s leading producers of agriculture  products , textiles , vehicles and  home to many modern appliances.

Statistics show the country’s share economic sectors in gross domestic product(GDP) from 2012to 2022 indicates agriculture contributed 6:48 % GDP while  industry and services accounted for 31.29 and 51.74 % respectively.

Turkey has a diverse economy with key sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism driving its growth.  As President  Samia lands in Ankara –Turkey for a five-day state visit, it is expected that , the President will tap into the many diverse  opportunities Turkey is blessed with that has boosted the country’s economy and also reduced unemployment rate especially among the youth.

Turkey being a member of G-20,also serves as an opportunity for President Samia to reconnect as countries, in order to renew bilateral relations after 14 years of physical engagement between the two nations.

One aspect that Tanzania could consider implementing from Turkey’s economic model is promoting manufacturing and industrialization. Over the past decade ,Tanzania’s manufacturing sector , although relatively small has the potential of contributing to the country’s overall GDP. Turkey is constantly flourishing in this sector. The country can boost of a robust manufacturing sector that contributes significantly to its GDP and exports. By dialoguing extensively on this sector and implementing all strategies used by Turkey, Tanzania can also  could create jobs, boost economic growth, and reduce reliance on imports .

Furthermore, Turkey has made strides in developing its tourism sector, attracting millions of visitors annually. Tanzania, known for its natural beauty and wildlife, could focus on improving its tourism infrastructure and marketing strategies to attract more tourists. This could generate revenue, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.

Another area Tanzania could learn from Turkey is in the development of agricultural practices. Turkey has a strong agricultural sector that ensures food security and contributes to its economy. By investing in modern agricultural techniques, improving infrastructure, and providing support to farmers, Tanzania could enhance its agricultural productivity and increase exports.

Turkey has emerged as a regional economic powerhouse with a diverse economy driven by industries such as automotive manufacturing, textiles, tourism, and agriculture. The strategic location of Turkey as a bridge between Europe and Asia has positioned it as a key player in global trade and geopolitics.

If President Samia is able to Implement similar strategies tailored to Tanzania’s unique context after her visit in Turkey,  could help diversify the economy, create jobs, and improve the standard of living for its citizens.
