Israeli Airstrike Kills Senior Hamas Leader in Gaza

A powerful airstrike carried out by Israeli forces has reportedly killed senior Hamas official Ismail Barhoum in southern Gaza.

The strike targeted Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, an area that has seen intense fighting in recent months. Reports indicate that at least four others lost their lives in the attack, while parts of the hospital sustained severe damage.

The Israeli military confirmed the operation, stating that it was aimed at a high-ranking figure within Hamas’s leadership. According to Israeli officials, Barhoum played a key role in the financial operations of the group and was considered a significant figure within its political wing. The military further accused Hamas of using civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, to shield its activities—an allegation the group has repeatedly denied.

Hamas issued a statement confirming Barhoum’s death, strongly condemning the attack. The organization described the strike as an “assassination” and vowed that it would not go unanswered. Officials from the group claimed that Barhoum was at the hospital for medical reasons at the time of the strike, calling the attack a violation of international norms.

Barhoum had been on international watchlists for some time. In December 2023, Britain sanctioned him, and by mid-2024, the European Union had placed restrictions on him due to his financial involvement with Hamas. His death is expected to impact the group’s leadership structure, though it remains uncertain what immediate effects it will have on its operations.

Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations have expressed alarm over the continued targeting of medical facilities in Gaza. The region’s health ministry reported that the latest strike not only claimed lives but also led to a large fire at the hospital, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation. With Gaza’s healthcare system under immense strain due to ongoing hostilities, attacks on hospitals and medical sites make access to urgent care even more challenging for civilians.

This latest development comes amid heightened tensions following the collapse of ceasefire talks.
