Guinea-Bissau Military Coup Sparks Regional Political Alarm

ECOWAS suspended Guinea-Bissau from all decision-making bodies and urged the military to return to barracks, warning of potential sanctions if civilian rule is not restored.
November 28, 2025

Guinea-Bissau faces a growing crisis after the military seized control of the country, ousting the president and appointing a transitional leader.

The deposed president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, fled to neighbouring Senegal, intensifying concerns over stability in the region.

The coup unfolded on 26 November 2025, just before provisional results of the disputed election were to be announced. Soldiers declared “total control” of the country, suspended the electoral process, and closed borders. Gunfire was reported near government buildings, signalling rising tensions that paved the way for military intervention.

The following day, the army established the High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order and appointed Horta Inta-A as transitional leader for at least one year.

Both ECOWAS and the African Union have strongly condemned the coup, demanding immediate restoration of constitutional governance. ECOWAS suspended Guinea-Bissau from all decision-making bodies and urged the military to return to barracks, warning of potential sanctions if civilian rule is not restored.

Analysts warn that the takeover threatens not only Guinea-Bissau’s fragile democracy but also regional stability in West Africa, a region with a history of political turbulence.

Regional leaders have dispatched high-level teams to negotiate with the junta and restore constitutional order. Meanwhile, citizens watch anxiously, fearing further instability and economic disruption in a country already vulnerable to crises.

The international community continues to press for a peaceful resolution and safe return of political leaders, while observers stress that Guinea-Bissau’s future hinges on transparent dialogue and a credible electoral process.
