Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) have once again delivered a unified message backing Ukraine’s sovereignty, marking four years since the conflict with Russia began.
Their joint declaration reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s independence, territorial integrity, and long-term stability, while emphasizing that international law must remain the foundation of any future peace agreement.
The statement was issued on February 24, 2026, following high-level discussions involving senior officials and foreign ministers from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. The leaders stressed that any negotiated settlement must fully respect the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine, underscoring their position that sovereignty cannot be compromised under external pressure.
The war began when Russia launched a full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, triggering what has since become one of the most significant geopolitical crises of the 21st century. Entire communities have been devastated, millions of civilians forced to flee their homes, and critical infrastructure heavily damaged. The humanitarian toll has been immense, while the economic shockwaves have extended far beyond the battlefield.
In their latest remarks, G7 leaders confirmed that economic sanctions against Moscow would remain in place, reinforcing efforts to limit Russia’s ability to finance its war effort. They also pledged continued financial and military assistance to Ukraine, aimed at helping the country defend its territory and maintain the functioning of its government and institutions.

These measures are intended to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive capacity while diplomatic channels remain open.
The war has also reshaped global economic priorities. European countries, in particular, have accelerated efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy by expanding alternative energy sources and diversifying supply chains. At the same time, developing nations, especially in Africa, have faced rising food and fuel prices linked to disruptions caused by the war, highlighting its far-reaching global consequences.
Analysts say the anniversary is both symbolic and strategic. It reflects Ukraine’s resilience and the continued unity of major industrialized nations, but also serves as a reminder that the path toward peace remains uncertain.
