G7 Condemns Iran, Backs Israel Amid Conflict

The Iranian government has rejected the accusation, insisting its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes as permitted under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), to which it remains a signatory.

The Group of Seven (G7) nations have voiced unwavering support for Israel amid its escalating conflict with Iran, calling Tehran a destabilizing force in the Middle East and reaffirming their commitment to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

In a joint statement released late on Monday, G7 leaders emphasized Israel’s “right to defend itself,” while accusing Iran of fueling terror and instability across the region. The remarks come as hostilities between the two rival nations have reached a critical point, following Israel’s airstrikes inside Iranian territory last Friday—described by Israeli officials as a “preemptive strike” to halt Iranian nuclear development.

The Iranian government has rejected the accusation, insisting its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes as permitted under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), to which it remains a signatory.

In the days since the initial strikes, Iran has launched multiple missile and drone attacks into Israeli territory, triggering a new wave of violence that has left over 220 Iranian civilians dead, according to state reports. Israel has confirmed at least 24 civilian casualties on its side. These figures underscore the rapidly growing human cost of the confrontation.

The flare-up comes at a time when the broader region is already tense. Since October 2023, Israel has been engaged in a controversial military campaign in Gaza, which has heightened regional sensitivities and drawn criticism over humanitarian concerns. The latest conflict with Iran risks spiraling into a larger regional war that could draw in other powers such as Hezbollah, Syria, or even Saudi Arabia.

The G7 also warned of the global consequences of prolonged instability in the Middle East, particularly regarding the global energy market. With the region serving as a major oil corridor, any disruption could rattle oil prices and impact global supply chains.

While diplomacy appears elusive for now, G7 leaders are calling for de-escalation and urging both Iran and Israel to refrain from further military action. The United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, and Japan—the members of the G7—have pledged to use all available diplomatic tools to prevent the crisis from evolving into a full-scale war.
