François Régis Uwayezu, a seasoned administrator with a diverse career in sports and public service, has been appointed as the Permanent Secretary in Rwanda’s Ministry of Sports.

This announcement, made by Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente on December 20, 2024, follows a presidential appointment by Paul Kagame, part of a broader effort to strengthen leadership within Rwanda’s sports sector.

Uwayezu is no stranger to high-level sports management. He previously served as the Secretary General of the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) from 2018 to 2021, where he played a significant role in shaping the country’s football policies. His expertise also extends to financial oversight, having worked as the Government Internal Auditor and Director of Administration and Finance.

In addition to his national contributions, Uwayezu briefly served as Chief Executive Officer for Simba Sports Club in Tanzania. While his tenure was short, spanning just under five months, it showcased his ability to navigate complex organizational landscapes in the sports world.

Reflecting on his appointment, Uwayezu expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, emphasizing his commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration in Rwanda’s sports sector. “Sports are more than just competition—they unite people, inspire youth, and serve as a platform for national pride. I am honored to take on this role and work toward these goals,” he said in a statement.

The new appointment also comes as Rwanda intensifies its focus on sports as a driver of national development. The government has made clear its intentions to elevate sports infrastructure, participation, and international partnerships. These efforts are seen as critical not only for fostering national unity but also for enhancing Rwanda’s global presence.

In the same cabinet reshuffle, Rwego Ngarambe was named Minister of State for Sports. With a Master’s degree in International Sports Law and extensive experience in sports business and governance, Ngarambe’s addition is expected to complement Uwayezu’s vision and strategy.

The duo will be tasked with implementing policies that support Rwanda’s growing ambitions in sports, from hosting international events to nurturing local talent. Their leadership will also focus on creating a more inclusive and accessible sports environment for all Rwandans.

Stakeholders and sports enthusiasts have welcomed the changes, expressing optimism that the new appointments will bring a fresh perspective to the sector. Many hope that Uwayezu’s background in governance and financial management will lead to more efficient and transparent operations within the ministry.
