A bold new initiative aimed at empowering Tanzanian youth and promoting sustainable forest use has been launched in Dar es Salaam, with the backing of the Government of Finland and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

President Alexander Stubb of Finland, who is on an official visit to Tanzania, officiated the launch of the project, which seeks to boost innovation and increase the economic value of forest products. The program focuses on providing young people with access to modern technologies and business skills to sustainably harness forest resources—without compromising the environment.

“This initiative will not only create jobs but also ensure that our forests are used responsibly,” said President Stubb at the event. “We are investing in the future—of young people, of communities, and of the planet.”

The project, called the #GreenCatalyst Initiative, will provide catalytic funding and support to early-stage enterprises and organizations working in the forestry sector. Priority will be given to businesses led by youth and women entrepreneurs, especially those based in under-served regions.

The launch was attended by top Tanzanian officials, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, and the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana.

“This is a big opportunity for our youth and small-scale entrepreneurs who want to be part of a green economy,” said Ambassador Kombo.

The initiative is part of the broader FUNGUO Innovation Programme, which is already supporting over 2,000 startups across the country. With €2 million in funding from Finland, the GreenCatalyst Initiative aims to strengthen low-carbon, community-driven enterprises that can generate jobs and reduce deforestation.

According to UNDP, the initiative aligns with Tanzania’s national development vision and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on responsible consumption, environmental protection, and economic growth.

Forests in Tanzania make up about 33 million hectares of land, but deforestation and unsustainable use have posed major threats to biodiversity and rural livelihoods. By equipping communities with tools for better forest management, the project hopes to turn these challenges into long-term opportunities.

The GreenCatalyst project is expected to run over two years, with the potential for expansion if successful. It stands as one of the most collaborative international efforts to build a green, inclusive economy in East Africa.
