EU Leaders Urge Trump to Ensure Europe’s Security

A joint statement from Brussels reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to the security and independence of Ukraine, emphasizing that unilateral negotiations could threaten regional stability.

European Union leaders have appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump to safeguard European security ahead of his upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

The meeting, scheduled for Friday, is expected to focus on the ongoing Ukraine conflict, now in its fourth year.

EU officials expressed concern over their exclusion from the discussions, highlighting the importance of multilateral engagement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will also not attend, leaving a potential gap in representation that European leaders say could undermine the legitimacy of any agreements reached.

Earlier, President Trump indicated a willingness to meet with Putin to gauge Russia’s commitment to ending the war. He suggested that Ukraine might need to cede certain territories in exchange for peace, a statement that alarmed European allies and raised concerns about sovereignty and international law.

In response, EU leaders stressed that any meaningful resolution must involve Ukraine directly. A joint statement from Brussels reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to the security and independence of Ukraine, emphasizing that unilateral negotiations could threaten regional stability.

Analysts have questioned the effectiveness of a bilateral summit, warning that without Ukraine’s participation, the talks may fall short of producing a lasting solution. They argue that sustainable peace requires an inclusive approach, incorporating all key stakeholders in the conflict.
