In a bold move by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), officials have on Tuesday arrived at the premises of Ghana’s Parliament . The mission is to disconnect the legislative house from the national power grid due to outstanding debts amounting to GH₵23 million.
This decision comes as the ECG seeks to enforce payment and address the accumulating debt owed by various entities.
The GH₵23 million debt owed by Parliament to the ECG has prompted the utility company to take action to ensure compliance with payment obligations. The threat of disconnection serves as a clear message that all customers, regardless of their status, must settle their outstanding bills to avoid service interruptions.
The company has been engaged in an aggressive revenue mobilisation drive for the past year.
The officials were spotted on the premises and around some key power transformers that supply electricity to the house.
Barring any intervention, Parliament may be without power to conduct business today.
The house is the latest to be affected after Accra Academy Senior High School was plunged into darkness after the ECG cut off the electricity supply due to GHS480,000 arrears.

“The problem ECG finds itself in is consistent debt. And every month, our debt profile is different. So we have to be more aggressive because we have bills to pay.
“We have issues so we have to be less compassionate, unfortunately,” she added on the Super Morning Show on February 20.
The decision to disconnect Parliament highlights the importance of timely payment and financial responsibility. As a public institution, Parliament is expected to lead by example in fulfilling its financial obligations, including settling utility bills promptly.
This development underscores the broader issue of debt management and payment discipline among public institutions and private entities alike. The ECG’s decision to disconnect Parliament sends a strong signal that non-payment will not be tolerated, and all customers must adhere to the terms of their agreements.
As the deadline for payment has elapsed, it remains to be seen how Parliament will respond to this ultimatum from the ECG.
