Despite the delay, the EAC Secretariat confirmed that preparatory consultations among member states will continue
November 29, 2025

The East African Community (EAC) has postponed a summit of heads of state that was scheduled to take place this month in Nairobi, citing ongoing political tensions, security concerns, and difficulties in advancing regional integration initiatives.

The meeting has been rescheduled for January next year, according to officials from the regional bloc.

The summit, which brings together leaders from all EAC member countries, was expected to address pressing issues including cross-border security, economic cooperation, and political harmonization. The postponement reflects the challenges the community faces in balancing diverse national interests while promoting unity and collective decision-making.

EAC officials emphasized that the delay allows leaders more time to prepare and ensure that discussions will be productive. “This decision was not taken lightly,” a spokesperson said, “but it is essential to guarantee that the summit addresses critical matters effectively and ensures actionable outcomes for all member states.”

Analysts note that postponing the summit could have implications for ongoing regional projects and initiatives, particularly in trade, infrastructure, and economic development. Observers warn that prolonged delays in high-level meetings may slow the implementation of policies designed to foster regional integration and political stability.

Despite the delay, the EAC Secretariat confirmed that preparatory consultations among member states will continue. Officials reiterated their commitment to dialogue, stressing the importance of collaboration to resolve disputes and maintain cohesion within the community.

The postponed summit comes at a time of heightened scrutiny, as the East African region continues to navigate complex political dynamics and security challenges. Leaders have pledged to reconvene in January with renewed focus on advancing integration, promoting economic growth, and ensuring peace and stability across the bloc.

The rescheduled summit is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the region’s strategic priorities for the coming year and reinforcing the EAC’s long-term vision of a united and prosperous East Africa
