Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Dr. Tulia Ackson,  officially opened an important meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

This gathering focused on the progress of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how member parliaments are contributing to their achievement.

Held in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, the event brought together leaders and representatives from various countries to share updates on their efforts toward fulfilling the SDGs. The meeting is a part of ongoing collaborations between the IPU and the United Nations to ensure that parliaments play a key role in sustainable development.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Ackson highlighted how crucial parliaments are in the successful implementation of the SDGs. She stressed that effective legislation, strong oversight, and active involvement in policymaking are all vital in driving the global development agenda forward.

The discussions also tackled some of the challenges faced by governments and parliaments, such as gaps in knowledge about the SDGs, inconsistent parliamentary engagement, and the need for better use of resources. Other issues, including aid effectiveness, tax reform, the global debt crisis, and international trade, were also discussed as obstacles in reaching the SDGs.

One of the key points raised during the meeting was the need to address the funding gap for the SDGs. Participants shared ideas on how to mobilize political will and find innovative financing methods. This discussion is particularly timely with the upcoming 4th UN International Conference on Financing for Development, which will be held in Spain in June 2025.
