June 30, 2025

Today, June 30, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) marks 65 years since it gained independence from Belgium. This milestone is celebrated nationwide with parades and cultural events, especially in major cities like Kinshasa and Lubumbashi.

However, the celebrations are tempered by ongoing violence in the eastern provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, where armed groups such as the Allied Democratic Forces and the March 23 Movement (M23) continue to exert control over parts of the region.

The eastern conflict has caused widespread humanitarian challenges, including displacement and insecurity, affecting thousands of civilians. Despite numerous peace initiatives, including talks hosted in Washington, D.C. and Doha, Qatar, the region remains unstable.

The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) continues to play a crucial role in protecting civilians and supporting peace efforts.

As the country marks this anniversary, Congolese people remember the long struggle for freedom that began with independence from colonial rule on June 30, 1960. The day is an occasion for hope that the ongoing diplomatic efforts will lead to lasting peace and development.
