Deadly Landslide Hits Sudan’s Marrah Mountains Region

Local authorities and international aid organizations are appealing for urgent assistance, including emergency food, clean water, medical supplies, and support for recovering those still missing.
September 5, 2025

A powerful landslide has struck the Marrah Mountains region in Darfur, Sudan, leaving hundreds dead and many more feared trapped. As of early September 2025, at least 375 bodies have been recovered and buried, though local authorities warn that the death toll could exceed 1,000.

The disaster hit the remote village of Tarasin following days of heavy rains that destabilized the steep slopes of the volcanic Marrah Mountains. Many homes and farmland were buried under mud and debris, making rescue efforts extremely difficult. Officials report that only a handful of villagers survived the catastrophic landslide.

The United Nations has described the full extent of the tragedy as unclear, citing the region’s limited accessibility. Humanitarian agencies are working against the clock to provide aid, but ongoing conflict between Sudan’s armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces has further complicated relief efforts. The violence, now in its third year, has displaced millions and created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

Local authorities and international aid organizations are appealing for urgent assistance, including emergency food, clean water, medical supplies, and support for recovering those still missing. Humanitarian workers face immense challenges due to blocked roads and damaged infrastructure, often relying on donkeys or small vehicles to reach survivors.

This disaster comes amid Sudan’s ongoing instability. Years of conflict in Darfur, combined with extreme weather events, have left communities vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods and landslides. Experts warn that climate change is likely to increase the frequency and severity of such events, further straining already fragile regions.

The international community is calling for immediate action to prevent further loss of life. Relief organizations emphasize the need for coordinated efforts to reach the most affected communities and provide long-term support to rebuild homes and infrastructure.

Authorities are also urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, avoid unstable slopes, and follow guidance from local officials and humanitarian agencies. While the tragedy has shocked the world, it has also highlighted the urgent need for lasting peace and stability in Sudan, alongside strategies to mitigate natural disasters in high-risk regions.
