At least 40 people have been killed and 19 others injured after fighters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the Abu Shouk camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) near El-Fasher in North Darfur, Sudan.

The camp, home to approximately 450,000 displaced individuals fleeing ongoing violence in the region, was reportedly targeted by RSF militants who stormed the settlement, attacking civilians in their homes.

Human rights activists based in El-Fasher, a city controlled by Sudan’s national army, condemned the attack, describing it as a serious violation of human rights and a stark reminder of the dangers facing innocent civilians caught in the Darfur conflict.

A spokesperson for the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Sudan and called for urgent measures to protect civilians and prevent further violence.

The RSF, a powerful paramilitary group involved in Sudan’s ongoing political turmoil, has been implicated in multiple clashes across the country. This recent assault raises fears of further instability and hardship for vulnerable populations.

International organizations continue to call for peaceful dialogue, civilian protection, and unrestricted humanitarian access to address the needs of those affected by Sudan’s protracted crisis.
