The opposition People’s Front for Freedom has raised serious concerns over the deteriorating health of its leader, veteran politician Kizza Besigye, saying his condition has significantly worsened while he remains in detention.
The party warned that the situation has reached a critical stage, prompting growing anxiety among supporters, civil society groups, and regional observers.
According to a statement released by the party, Besigye was transferred late at night from a high-security prison to a medical facility in the Bugolobi area under heavy guard. The transfer, described as urgent, was reportedly carried out while he was in a fragile condition. However, authorities have not provided clear information regarding the nature of his illness or the treatment he received, a silence that has further fueled speculation and concern.
The opposition party said the lack of transparency surrounding Besigye’s medical care has heightened fears about his welfare and raised broader questions about how political detainees are treated while in custody. Party officials have openly placed responsibility for his health and safety on the state and prison authorities, calling for immediate access for his family members and personal doctors without restrictions.
They argue that allowing independent medical professionals to examine him would help address concerns and restore public confidence. The party has also reiterated its position that Besigye’s continued detention is unlawful and has called for his immediate release so that he can seek comprehensive medical care in an environment of his choosing.
Besigye, a long-standing opposition figure in Uganda, has been in custody since November 2024. His arrest followed an incident in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was reportedly seized by security officers while attending the launch of a book by a prominent human rights activist and politician. His subsequent transfer back to Uganda and arraignment before a military court sparked controversy both locally and internationally.

He is facing several charges, including treason and illegal possession of firearms, accusations his legal team strongly disputes. His lawyers maintain that the prolonged detention has had a severe impact on his physical health, warning that continued incarceration without proper medical attention could have life-threatening consequences.
The case has attracted growing attention from human rights organizations, which have expressed alarm over reports of his declining health and the use of military courts to try civilians. Several groups have urged authorities to respect due process, uphold constitutional protections, and ensure that detainees receive adequate medical care.
Political analysts say the situation reflects wider concerns about political freedoms and the state of democracy in the country. They warn that how the authorities handle Besigye’s case could have lasting implications for public trust, political stability, and international relations.
