The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) is reportedly eyeing Chris Hughton as a potential candidate for the position of head coach.

Hughton, who has been without a job since his departure as Ghana coach in February following a disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is now in contention for the Irish national team’s top coaching position.

The 65-year-old returned to the United Kingdom (UK) after leaving his role with Ghana, awaiting his next opportunity. The Irish Sun reports that Hughton is a leading contender for the head coach role, with some members of the Irish FA viewing him favorably and expecting an offer to be extended.

Ireland is currently without a head coach, with former Manchester United defender John O’Shea serving as interim manager. Hughton’s tenure with Ghana saw a lower win rate compared to his predecessors, including Charles Kwabla (CK) Akonnor, Milovan Rajevac, and Otto Addo. Hughton’s win rate of 31% was the lowest among the last four coaches of the Black Stars.

Following Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 AFCON, where they failed to secure a single victory and were eliminated in the group stage, Hughton was relieved of his duties as coach. Ghana has since reinstated Otto Addo as the head coach of the national team.

Former Ghana Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, faced a tumultuous tenure marked by disappointing results during his time leading the national team. Hughton’s coaching stint with the Black Stars ended in February after a dismal showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Ivory Coast.

The 65-year-old coach’s win rate of 31% was notably lower than his predecessors, including Charles Kwabla (CK) Akonnor, Milovan Rajevac, and Otto Addo. Akonnor achieved a win rate of 40%, while Rajevac and Addo boasted win rates of 38% and 42%, respectively.

Hughton’s tenure came to an end following Ghana’s underwhelming performance at the 2023 AFCON, where the team failed to secure a single victory. In the aftermath, Ghana has reinstated Otto Addo as the head coach of the national team.

Despite his previous coaching successes with clubs like Newcastle United and Brighton, Hughton’s time with the Ghana Black Stars was marred by disappointing results and ultimately led to his departure from the role.
