Airlines operating in the region, including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Emirates, and Air New Zealand, had to adjust flight paths for safety reasons.

A Chinese naval exercise in international waters between Australia and New Zealand caused disruptions to commercial flights, forcing some airlines to change their routes.

The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) had notified Australian authorities just before the live-fire drill began. The exercise involved three warships and took place about 340 nautical miles off the coast of New South Wales.

Although the drills were conducted legally under international law, the unexpected military activity prompted aviation authorities to issue warnings. Airlines operating in the region, including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Emirates, and Air New Zealand, had to adjust flight paths for safety reasons.

Notably, an Emirates flight from Sydney to Christchurch received a direct communication from Chinese military forces instructing the plane to avoid the area. The incident raised concerns about the impact of military operations on civilian air traffic.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong acknowledged the event and emphasized the importance of maintaining transparency in military exercises that could affect commercial operations. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Defence Minister Judith Collins called the situation “significant,” stressing the need for open communication between nations when conducting such drills.

This event follows heightened tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, including previous encounters between Chinese and Australian military forces. While the drill remained within legal boundaries, its location and the impact on civilian aviation have prompted increased monitoring by Australian and New Zealand defense forces.

Authorities from both countries are closely following developments and maintaining dialogue with Chinese officials to ensure that future military activities do not compromise regional security or disrupt civilian operations.
