Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have taken a major step to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including agriculture, cross-border trade, and regional security.

The agreement was formalized in Kinshasa in the presence of the two countries’ presidents, along with senior government officials responsible for agriculture.

Under the pact, both nations agreed to enhance collaboration in the agriculture sector, aiming to improve productivity, support smallholder farmers, and facilitate trade across their shared border. Officials also committed to fast-tracking a joint cross-border commerce initiative designed to boost economic activity and prosperity for border communities.

In addition to economic cooperation, the two countries pledged to coordinate their regional security efforts through the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR). They emphasized maintaining a unified stance on security challenges, sharing strategies to address instability, and promoting peace in the wider Great Lakes region.

The leaders also agreed to align their diplomatic approaches and reinforce their collaboration in regional forums, emphasizing infrastructure development, trade facilitation, and political stability. Government officials from both nations highlighted that this new agreement builds on a series of previously signed treaties, further cementing the close relationship between Burundi and the DRC.

Observers say the pact could serve as a blueprint for enhancing regional integration in Central Africa, demonstrating how neighboring countries can work together to address shared economic, social, and security challenges. The agreement was signed at the conclusion of a two-day visit by Burundi’s president to Kinshasa, underscoring the importance of strong bilateral ties and cooperative leadership.

By combining agricultural development, trade expansion, and coordinated security efforts, Burundi and the DRC hope to create a more stable, prosperous, and connected region, benefiting both nations and their border communities.
