Brenda Biya Calls for Change in Cameroon Ahead of Elections

Her call has been met with mixed reactions. Many young Cameroonians see her words as courageous, a rare voice of truth against a powerful dynasty.
September 20, 2025

Daughter of President Paul Biya  Brenda Biya has taken a public stand against her father’s leadership. Speaking through a TikTok video shared under her online name “King Nasty,” Brenda urged citizens not to re-elect her father in the upcoming 2025 Cameroonian presidential election, set for October.

Her message was clear and emotional. Brenda accused the government of presiding over decades of stagnation, high unemployment, and widespread poverty. “Cameroon deserves better,” she declared, adding that her father’s rule, which began in 1982, has not delivered the progress that citizens have long been promised.

What makes this moment extraordinary is not just the criticism, but the source. It is the first time in Africa’s modern political history that a child of a sitting president has openly urged the public to reject their own parent at the ballot box. At 92, President Biya remains one of the world’s longest-serving leaders, and his bid for another term has already raised concerns about generational change and political renewal.

Brenda, who lives in Switzerland, added a personal note to her political critique. She spoke about feeling estranged from her family, claiming mistreatment and betrayal by those around her. At one point, she alleged that some close to her “wanted her dead,” remarks that have only fueled debates about tensions within the Biya household.

Her call has been met with mixed reactions. Many young Cameroonians see her words as courageous, a rare voice of truth against a powerful dynasty. Others question whether her privileged life abroad allows her to speak authentically about the hardships faced daily by ordinary citizens. Analysts warn that her statement could deepen divisions within the ruling elite while also energising the opposition.

President Biya’s administration has so far remained silent on the matter. This silence, in a country where dissent is often suppressed, may reflect a strategic effort to downplay Brenda’s comments. Yet the timing — just weeks before a crucial election — means her words are likely to remain in the spotlight.

Cameroon’s political history has long been dominated by Biya’s leadership, but Brenda’s intervention has introduced a new dynamic. Whether her plea will influence voters remains uncertain, but it has already challenged the perception of unity around the presidency.
