The Catholic community in Haiti continues to face a wave of kidnappings and ransom demands, as reported by Father Gilbert Peltrop, the former pastor of Saint-Gérard Parish in Carrefour-Feuilles.
Armed individuals recently invaded La Madeleine Orphanage, where several sisters from the Saint-Joseph de Cluny Congregation reside. Despite the incident, there has been no communication from the kidnappers regarding ransom demands as of Wednesday.
The area in Port-au-Prince where the attack occurred is controlled by the ‘400 Mawozo’ gang, contributing to heightened insecurity in the Haitian capital. Gangs have been targeting police facilities and correctional centers, resulting in over 5,000 inmates escaping following an armed assault on the National Penitentiary and Civil Prison of Croix-des-Bouquets on March 2.
Moreover, various units of the Haitian National Police, such as the Bon-Repos Sub-Commission, Cazeau Sub-Commission, and Carrefour de l’Aéroport Sub-Commission, were attacked and set on fire by members of the criminal coalition “Viv ansanm,” demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
The escalating violence has led to concerns about government stability, with multiple gangs expressing intentions to overthrow the administration. Prime Minister Henry’s legitimacy has been in question since assuming power after the assassination of Jovenel Moïse in 2021, amid a lack of organized elections.
In addition to political unrest, institutions like the Catholic Church have become targets of insecurity and gang-related violence. Former police officer Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, spokesperson for the “Viv ansanm” group, announced plans for releasing hostages without ransom and escalating actions against the Prime Minister.
Despite these developments, six members of the Sacred Heart Congregation, including five religious brothers abducted in Bicentenaire on February 23, remain in captivity awaiting their release.
