Russia has continued strengthening its political and economic partnerships with countries across the Global South as Moscow seeks to deepen cooperation with African, Asian, and Latin American nations amid shifting global power dynamics.
In recent months, Russian officials have increased diplomatic engagement with several developing economies through bilateral agreements, investment discussions, and multilateral platforms such as BRICS. The bloc, which originally included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has become an increasingly important platform for Moscow as it works to expand economic cooperation outside Western-led institutions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly emphasized the importance of building a “multipolar world order,” arguing that emerging economies should play a larger role in global decision-making. Moscow says partnerships with Global South countries are based on mutual respect, sovereignty, and economic development.
Trade between Russia and African countries has continued to grow, particularly in sectors such as energy, agriculture, mining, education, and security cooperation. Russian companies have also shown increased interest in infrastructure and industrial projects across parts of Africa and Asia.

Several African governments have strengthened cooperation with Russia in recent years through agreements involving grain supplies, fertilizer exports, energy partnerships, and military training programs. Russian officials say these partnerships are helping support food security and economic development in developing nations.
At the same time, Russia has expanded ties with Asian economies, especially China and India, through increased energy exports and financial cooperation. Moscow has also encouraged the use of national currencies in trade transactions in an effort to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar in international markets.
The expansion of BRICS has further boosted Russia’s diplomatic outreach. The group has attracted growing interest from countries seeking alternative economic partnerships and stronger representation in global financial institutions. Analysts say Russia views BRICS as a strategic platform to strengthen trade, investment, and political coordination among non-Western economies.
Russian leaders have also increased participation in international forums focused on Africa and Asia, including economic summits and development conferences aimed at attracting investment and promoting long-term cooperation.
Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions with Western nations, Moscow continues to position itself as a key partner for countries seeking diversified economic and diplomatic relationships. Russian officials argue that cooperation with the Global South will remain a major pillar of the country’s foreign policy strategy in the coming years.
