President Samia Mourns Death of Veteran Journalist Charles Hilary

“I have received with great sadness the news of the passing of Mr. Charles Hilary, which occurred today, May 11, 2025,” the President stated.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Mr. Charles Hilary, Director of the Presidential Communications Directorate at the Zanzibar State House (Ikulu), who passed away earlier today.

In a condolence message released on Sunday, President Samia offered heartfelt sympathies to the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, as well as to the bereaved family, colleagues, and the entire media fraternity.

I have received with great sadness the news of the passing of Mr. Charles Hilary, which occurred today, May 11, 2025,” the President stated.

Charles Hilary will be remembered for his distinguished contribution of over 40 years to the growth and development of Tanzania’s media sector — from radio broadcasting to television — and for his mentorship to young journalists,” she added.

President Samia prayed for strength and patience for Hilary’s family during this difficult time and asked God to grant eternal peace to the departed soul.

We belong to God, and to Him we shall return,” she concluded.

Hilary, a seasoned media professional, previously served at various outlets including Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam (now TBC) and the BBC, before holding senior roles at Azam Media and later being appointed to his final role at State House Zanzibar in 2023.

He passed away in the early hours of Sunday while being rushed to Muhimbili National Hospital (Mloganzila) after a sudden illness.
