Putin Meets With President Emmerson

Russian President Vladimir Putin has held discussions with Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the Constantine Palace about the need to  solidify their ties.

During the meeting, President Putin highlighted the longstanding relations between Russia and Zimbabwe, which were established during Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence and have since progressed significantly.

President Putin expressed satisfaction with the substantial increase in mutual trade over the past year but emphasized the need for further diversification of their bilateral ties. The two leaders discussed their strong cooperation in humanitarian and educational fields, noting that 400 young Zimbabweans are currently studying in Russia with plans to expand this program.

Putin  noted that the two countries have good relations in the humanitarian and educational spheres, with 400 students from Zimbabwe studying in the Russian Federation and the Russian side is constantly increasing this quota.

“I am glad to have the opportunity to meet you on the margins of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. I am sure that your presence will symbolise the African continent’s interest in developing relations with the Russian Federation, and this is one of the priority areas for us,” Putin addressed Mnangagwa.

Acknowledging President Mnangagwa’s support in joint international efforts, President Putin highlighted the alignment of their countries’ positions on key global issues. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, underscoring Africa’s interest in strengthening relations with Russia.

Both leaders discussed the need to further diversify their economic cooperation beyond trade, especially focusing on enhancing ties in humanitarian and educational sectors.

Mnangagwa flew to Russia from Seoul on 6 June to attend the 27th edition of St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) which began two days ago which focused on the theme :“The Formation of New Areas of Growth as the Cornerstone of a Multipolar World.”

SPIEF has evolved into a prominent global platform where the business community convenes to address crucial economic matters impacting Russia, emerging markets, and the global economy. This year’s edition has drawn over 17,100 participants from 136 countries and territories, along with 3,400 media representatives.
