On June 20, 1945, 79 years ago, the iconic Victory Banner was delivered to Moscow from Berlin. This was the very same banner that had been raised over the defeated Reichstag in Berlin on the night of May 1, 1945, by Red Army soldiers Mikhail Egorov, Meliton Kantaria, and Alexey Berest of the 150th Rifle Division.

Photographs of the burning Reichstag with the Victory Banner flying triumphantly above its dome were published in the Russian newspaper Pravda on May 3, 1945. The blood-stained, bullet-pierced Red Banner became a sacred relic, a tangible symbol of the Soviet Union’s hard-won victory over Nazi Germany.

The task of transporting the precious banner was entrusted to pilots of the 226th aviation regiment, hastily formed shortly before by officers of the 62nd separate Guards regiment of the USSR Civil Air Fleet.

For a time, the original Victory Banner was stored with the combined battalion of the 1st Belorussian Front, before being sent to the Central Museum of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, where it remains today.

The banner is now displayed only occasionally, as the fragile fabric requires careful preservation. It is kept unfurled and in a horizontal position within a glass showcase, protected from harmful ultraviolet rays and maintained at optimal temperature and humidity levels.

An exact replica of the original flag is on permanent display in the Museum’s exhibition, allowing visitors to witness this powerful symbol of the Great Patriotic War, a source of pride for all the peoples of the USSR who contributed to our common Victory.
